Maine and Down East Humor

As a former Mainer, I feel that I ought to respond to Leon of After Nature's posts about his vacation there.  He needs an introduction to "Down East" humor and its most famous comedian, Tim Sample.  Watch the first video clip on his sight and notice something, the "Down East" or "Mainer" accent.  Many Mainers have Scottish backgrounds--it is next to "New Scotland" or the Canadian province of Nova Scotia--and also British backgrounds as the Loyalists moved north.  On Cape Breton of Nova Scotia, they still have a heavy Scottish accent and unique brogue to this day.

  1. I actually noticed the accent, Jason. I love Maine. And thanks for this post.
